Windy winter days brings me shivers just thinking about it. The cold temperature dries up the moisture in the air. To compensate for this, we turn on the house or car heater and take warm baths. All these conditions add dryness to our skin. No protection or treatment to the skin, will lead to some serious chapping or cracking. I don’t even want to try describing how painful it is when the skin on the tips of the fingers, start to split. I’m sure most people have experienced one or both of these dry skin conditions.
If we can only live in the tropics all year round, our skin wouldn’t have any moisture problems. This is just wishful thinking to those of us who have to work 365 days of the year. Then again, who wants to deal with the humidity. So, what can we do to moisturize our skin? For starters, we can use moisturizing lotion on our skin. Preferably use something containing Aloe Vera. This type of lotion works well even on hands with cracked skin on the fingertips. Use Lip Balm to protect the lips. There are many products available now that contain some sort of medication to relieve pain when the chapping is severe. There are also home remedies that can be used to protect or medicate the skin. The use of oils from St. John's wort, olives or mashed avocados works well on several types of skin conditions. Especially Olive oil, I’ve found this to keep a warmer body temperature. It’s excellent for moisturizing the skin in the winter. These oils are applied after taking a shower. Test a spot on your elbow to see allergic reactions before applying to the whole body.
