The Big Berkey is made by Doulton/British Berkefeld. An Emergency Water Filter system designed for use in situations where a reliable supply of treated drinking water is unavailable. This unit is constructed of high grade, polished stainless steel, making it hygienic, durable and easy to clean.

How It Works
The two piece housing is portable, stores easily and can be used virtually anywhere, anytime. The upper chamber is filled with water which gravity feeds through the filters into the lower chamber. An easy to turn On-Off spigot is used as the outflow tap.

The Heart of The System
The "Supersterasyl" ceramic filter elements can be stored indefinitely before first use. Supersterasyl filters, reduces up to 99.99% of particulates, cysts, parasites, and pathogenic bacteria including but not limited to E. Coli, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and Salmonella Typhi. Additionally, these filters will reduce chlorine, rust, sediment and organic chemicals. With nominal particulate filtration rating efficiencies of >98% down to 0.2 microns (spectrum Labs), >99.9% at 0.5 microns and >99.99% at 0.9 microns, this is one powerful filter system.

Versatility
The durable ceramic filters can be cleaned over and over with a soft brush or Scotch Brite pad. The filter media in this product contains pure silver, an effective antimicrobial agent. The Big Berkey comes with four 9 inch Supersterasyl filters and two grommet plugs. The plugs can be used to block the top canister orifice giving the consumer the option to utilize 2 filters in use and the other two as spare. Each filter element will provide efficient filtration from 2,600 gallons to 15,0000 gallons depending on water quality.

The 7 inch Filter vs. the 9 inch Filter

We are often asked, what is the difference between the 7 inch filter and the 9 inch filter? Let's take a moment and refresh our product's history for the benefit of those who are not familiar with the British Berkefeld Water Filtration systems. We offer the Big Berkey which comes with (4) 9 inch Supersterasyl filters, and the SS4X4 which includes (4) 7 inch Supersterasyl filters.

Supersterasyl
The Sterasyl® grade filter is designed to remove suspended solids and pathogenic bacteria. Both the Big Berkey and the SS4X4 filters were produced using the latest ceramic techniques to provide a hollow porous ceramic which is fired at a temperature in excess of 10000C. They are designed to operate with water flow going from the outside to inside of the element.

The 3 layer composition of the Sterasyl® filter contains diatomaceous earth, granular activated carbon and pure silver. This silver is a specially formulated self-sterilizing (bacteriostatic) agent. The result is that bacterial growth is prevented from occurring within the Sterasyl® filter element. More importantly, bacterial “grow-through” is eliminated. This silver content is about 0.07%, which is well within the allowable levels recommended by the World Health Organization and the E.P.A. Because of the silver, Sterasyl® filter elements do not require sterilization after cleaning.

The 2 inch Advantage?
The British Berkefeld water systems consists of 2 stainless steel canisters. The top canister where the filters are housed, is 10 inches in height. The bottom canister used to catch the filtered water, is also 10 inches in height. These 2 canisters are stacked together based on gravity feed. Due to spillage, often times the top canister is not filled to it's maximum level capacity. Therefore, the top of the 9 inch filter does not work as much compared to it's lower sections.

Is Big better?
The Big Berkey and the SS4X4 uses the same exact stainless steel canisters in terms of quality, diameter and height. Both the 7 inch and the 9 inch filters have the same performance and construction. They both render identical filtration capabilities. Both have the same orifice size which ultimately determines the yield of filtered water in gallons per hour.
